How to approach a trans woman with respect

Most of this is just ordinary dating etiquette. The rest is about not making someone's gender the whole conversation.

Start here

Treat the first message like you would with anyone else

A good opener references something specific in her profile — an interest, a photo, a line she wrote — the same way you'd message anyone you found interesting. If the only thing your message reacts to is that she's trans, that's the tell that gives away the intent, and it reads as fetishizing rather than interested.

What to avoid

Questions and comments to leave out, at least early on

What actually helps

The basics that carry the most weight

Use her name and pronouns without prompting

Not as a performance, just consistently and without needing correction. It signals you were paying attention before you messaged, not just reacting to a category.

Let her set the pace on personal topics

If she wants to talk about her transition, she'll bring it up. Following her lead rather than steering the conversation there yourself is the single clearest signal of respect.

None of this is complicated — it's the same standard you'd want applied to you on a first message. The difference is that trans women get it wrong far more often than most daters, which is exactly why it stands out when someone gets it right.
